From Script To Screen Mind Map

These are my two mind maps for script to screen, one of them contains the things that came straight to mind from the three words I got which was astronaut, theatre, and telescope. While the other mind map shows me thinking about the connections that the different aspects may have and how they could come together to form a story.

  1. Me again... so yeah, there's definitely something bubbling away here about the 'kids' play/theatre' - so a link between 'make believe' and making something happen. There's an implied sweetness to your three components which I suspect will suit you down to the ground! Obviously, the 'theatre' could be one of those moments that open Toy Story 3 where we shown this big action packed adventure... that turns out to be a child's game - or in your instance, a play being performed by a child in their own room in one of those classic paper-style theatres...

    or puppet theatre or similar...

I think the trick here is to think about the 'child's backstory' for a bit.... maybe the child's father is an astronaut who is always away from home on these long voyages, and so the story is about her missing him... she looks through her telescope, awaiting his return and enacts make-believe stories with her in it... Or there's a reason why the child cannot leave her/his room, so dreams of escape and freedom and this is expressed through her/his imaginary adventures 'inside' the realm of the theatre; more boldly from a style point of view, you could decide your story takes place on a completely different planet, so you have non-human characters to think about and design for - so a little 'martian' child dreaming of some big adventure 'out there'... In lots of ways, your telescope and your theatre are super useful to you, as they're both indicative of 'make-believe' and of yearning to discover/visit somewhere else. It's for this reason I think you need to think about 'who' your character is and what they want, what is missing, what they need and so on... as this will also suggest what your ending might need to be about.
